The Queen Mary University of London is a public institution in London, UK. It ranks 125 (2023) and 117 (2022) in the QS and THE world rankings, respectively. The institution goes back to 1785, with its founding institutions being the London Hospital Medical College, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, Queen Mary College, and Westfield College. 

In 1934, the institution became Queen Mary College. In 1995, it merged with Bart’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, finally becoming the Queen Mary University of London in 2000. The institution has triple accreditation from the ACCA, CIMA, and the ICAEW. When Widener University began a new strategic planning process last year, I knew we needed an innovative approach to help us remain competitive in the rapidly changing higher education environment. And that was before the pandemic!

Most university strategic plans commit to doing more of what is already common practice. They outline important, but table stakes activities like experiential learning. They restate core values, such as excellence. Or they commit to basic business practices like expanding recruitment to bolster enrollment. While these are all important goals, they exemplify what is not strategic about traditional strategic planning.

At Widener, we intentionally focused on our strategy, not planning. We committed to building a strategy that would adapt to rapid change and position the university to thrive. To do this, I invited 18 of our most creative and open-minded thinkers—not the usual strategic planning representatives— to spend eight months in deep and recursive reflection, learning about the future of higher education. While exploring what the students of today and of the future want and need, the team created multiple scenarios representing possible strategies. 

These scenarios—narratives of what a proposed strategy might look like in action—kept our work creative, fun, and open. Most importantly, they were essential in helping us to envision a variety of possible futures. The core group shared their thinking with groups across campus and gained useful feedback that led to refinement. Four initial scenarios boiled down to two, and finally one compelling narrative of what Widener could look like in five years.

A clear strategy emerged from the final narrative: a focus on agility and the enhancement of the student experience that we call “Agility Experienced.” A key metaphor that has become fundamental to our work is to build with LEGO blocks rather than poured concrete; in short, maximize agility and continuous improvement.

Spread across 400 acres, the institute has three campuses in Miami-Dade County. Approximately seven miles from downtown Miami, Coral Gables is the main campus with two colleges and seven schools. The University of Strathclyde is a public research university in Glasgow, UK. The REF2021 Times Higher Education analysis has rated 90% of its research as internationally excellent or research rated. The institution is ranked at 401-500th in THE 2022 rankings and 325 in the 2023 QS World University rankings. The University started in 1796 as Anderson’s Institution. 

The Royal College fused with the Scottish College of Commerce in 1964, getting a royal charter that gave it university status. The institution has several accreditations like EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA and others like the ICAS, ACCA, and CIPD. The institution has 23,000+ students from more than 100 countries worldwide. 

The University has its campus at Glasgow, in the city centre. There are several research centres including the Technology and Innovation Centre, Advanced Forming Research Centre, Centre for Sustainable Development, and the Weir Advanced Research Centre.

The University was initially a non-degree granting institution. It started awarding bachelor's degrees in science when its 18 departments were organized into four schools in 1914. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). There is a total of 23,217 students, including 14,367 undergraduate students, 8,850 graduate and professional students, and 4,565 online students.

The University has three campuses in the city: the University City campus, the Centre City campus, and the Queen Lane campus. There are five libraries on the university campus. Students can participate in more than 300 clubs and organizations based on individual interests. 

Drexel includes the Pennoni Honors College, Graduate College, Thomas R. Florida Polytechnic University is a public university established in 2012 with a singular focus on STEM education with project-based learning. It served as a branch campus for the 1988-founded University of South Florida until the year 2012 and is ranked 1st among the best public universities and 26th among public engineering programs without a Ph.D., according to U.S. News. 

The Southern Association of Colleges and School Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and ABET accredit the university. Currently, the Florida Polytechnic University has 294 more staff members on top of its 74 teaching members and approximately 1550 undergraduate and 72 graduate students.

The institution has an area of 530.87 acres and has a single large campus with seven buildings, most of which house various departments and divisions.
