Western Illinois University is a public institution in Macomb, Illinois, USA. It was founded in 1899 as the Western Illinois State Normal School to prepare teachers to work at grammar schools throughout the state. It became Western Illinois University in 1967.
Western Illinois University has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is also approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. As of fall 2021, the total student enrollment is 7,455 out of which 5,394 are undergraduate and 2,061 are graduate students. The student-to-faculty ratio stands at 13:1 and there are 288 full-time tenured faculty.
The university’s main campus is located in Macomb, Illinois, and includes more than 60 buildings spread across an area of 1,000 acres. It has several research and study centers including the Center for Best Practices in Early Childhood Education, Central Illinois Adult Education Service Center, Children's Literature Examination Center, COEHS Advising, Infant and Preschool Center, Center for Applied Criminal Justice, Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center, Reading Center, and the Center for Social Studies Education.
There are 47 degree programs including bachelor's, master’s, certificate, and doctoral programs along with four degrees that are exclusively for the WIU Quad Cities campus, namely engineering, counseling, museum studies, and environmental science.
