History of the University of Florida
The history of the University of Florida dates back to the early days of state-funded higher education. Gilbert Kingsbury founded the East Florida Seminary in 1853, not long after Governor Thomas Brown signed a measure providing funding.
In 1905, this finally combined to become the new University of the State of Florida, together with the previous Florida Agricultural College, the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School, and the South Florida Military College.
