Research in Sport, Health and Exercise Science aims to enhance understanding of practices and processes that support the active lifestyles, health, well-being, sporting performance and coaching practices of individuals and groups. We have world-class staff and facilities, and we collaborate with world leading clinical and scientific researchers.  

There are two research groups;

• Exercise, Health and Human Performance (EHHP)
• Sport, Pedagogy and Practice (SPP)

The EHHP group have medicine as an underlying theme and seek to understand the role and implementation of exercise testing for disease risk; the effectiveness of life-style interventions involving physical activity; and responses and adaptations to exercise and sport. The SPP group research seeks to develop innovative research that explores the complex and multi-layered nature of applied coaching practice, as well as the challenging nature of personal experiences within sport and exercise.

Our MA (Hons) Physical Education programme aims to develop practitioners with:

Our degree offers an excellent route into physical education careers both in the UK and abroad. After you graduate you can register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Over the past decade the sports science discipline of Performance Analysis has seen a rapid growth at both elite and grass roots levels. Our course has been specifically designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as a Performance Analyst. 

At Worcester you will have access to the latest software and hardware, giving you experience of new and emerging technologies at the forefront of the discipline. The applied nature of the course forms the core of the programme with a significant part being vocationally based.

The course content builds on the foundational skills and theory learnt on an undergraduate degree course in sports coaching, sports science or performance analysis. Enabling you to obtain the essential skills, knowledge and experience to enter employment. 

The principle aim of the Master's degree in Strength and Conditioning is to prepare students for employment within the strength and conditioning industry. This is achieved through academic staff with both experience in the applied sector and currency of research within the strength and conditioning profession and related areas.

Sport and exercise are more sophisticated than ever before. From the impact on our bodies to the impact on our communities, our understanding of the subject is growing every day. With that growth comes a whole range of specialist fields and niche subjects, not to mention a variety of career paths. This masters course can prepare you for those possibilities, offering the mix of critical thinking, expert knowledge and professional skills vital for new areas of health, exercise intervention and sports education.

It’s a course built on solid scientific and practical foundations. We provide an interdisciplinary perspective – giving you the chance to touch on areas like sport and exercise genetics and neuroscience in sport and exercise. As such, this is a flexible course that offers two pathways.

The programme is designed and suitable for qualified podiatrists with clinical experience and an interest in sports medicine. It is based on the philosophy that the total care for the athlete requires personal skill/expertise and a multidisciplinary approach underpinned by evidenced based medicine. It should also appeal to those who want to enhance their clinical knowledge and expertise

Sport and exercise psychologists work with athletes, either as individuals or as teams. They develop strategies that improve performance. We will prepare you with the skills and knowledge to develop better performance in individual and team-based sports.

Newcastle University is the first Russell Group University to develop an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology. We have expert academics and clinical staff from the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

You'll develop your understanding of psychology in a sport and exercise context. This includes the theory, evidence and practice. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills to become a reflective practitioner. We'll prepare you for further professional training. This is a route towards eligibility to practice as a sport and exercise psychologist.

Students will prepare for:

• careers in sport and exercise psychology
• higher research-related degrees (for example a PhD)

People are increasingly encouraged to undertake sport and exercise as part of a healthier lifestyle. Although this has a number of global health benefits, a related caveat is an increased risk of injury. Currently, sporting injuries commonly present to the health professional; these injuries present a unique challenge in terms of their aetiology, management and potential for recurrence.

Sport and Exercise medicine is now recognised as a specialist area and there are growing numbers of physicians and allied health professionals seeking to work in this diverse and exciting area. The teaching faculty comprises a balance of respected academics and clinical specialists in relevant fields of Sports Medicine, Physical Activity and Sports Biomechanics.

The course mixes taught elements with independent research and self-directed study. There is flexibility to pursue personal interests in considerable depth, with guidance and inspiration from supportive tutors. By the end of the course, you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects.

The programme is designed to build on the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) award and the UKSCA Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCC) award, to provide a necessary range of theoretical and practical experiences for a career as a strength and conditioning practitioner

Psychological support in sport has emerged as an essential element of sport performance and wellbeing, with sportspeople at all levels benefitting from advice provided by trained professionals in this field.

With an emphasis on applied theory, practical work, and community engagement, this programme aims to provide students with a multidisciplinary understanding of sport science with an option to specialise in a particular area.

The MSc Sport Science is designed for graduates from sport-related degrees and professional practitioners wishing to keep their scientific knowledge and skills up to date.

Students will be encouraged to undertake applied work in the areas that best fit their interests and career plans. Academics with specialist knowledge offer mentorship and support throughout the research project.

Our Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Science syllabus is formulated to foster independent, problem-solving individuals who are critical, analytical and resilient to the challenges of the research and applied environment.

It will provide students with a comprehensive experience of the research domain whilst developing specific technical competencies and applied skills in the core disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology (including motor control).

As a student, you will have full access to the multi-million pound, state-of-the-art Health Science Building and Sports Complex, incorporating a running track, dedicated research space and teaching laboratories.

This facility houses state-of-the-art equipment; where students can learn to conduct complete physiological, psychological and biomechanical profiles of human subjects using breath-by-breath expired gas analysis, blood analysis, body composition analysis (via the DEXA), eye-tracking, electromyography and human movement analysis.

Our MSc Sport Exercise and Nutrition course is accredited through the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr*) and the modules on the Master’s programme have been designed to align with the competencies required by the SENr, Graduate accreditation pathway.  This accreditation process recognises that graduates from this course have attained the necessary applied knowledge competencies, as recognised by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition industry.

As a Master of Science in Sport Exercise and Nutrition student at Northumbria, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to work in multi-disciplinary teams and high-performance environments. You will learn how to work with people from multi-cultural and diverse background providing dietary advice whilst also considering important lifestyle considerations. For example, you will be encouraged to study contemporary practices that promote sustainability such as plant-based diets and address the dietary needs of special population groups such as the young, female and ethnically diverse athletes.
