The Forensic Science programme has a reputation as being the best of its type in the country. It will provide you with advanced knowledge of the forensic processes and analytical techniques (particularly chemistry and biology) used in crime investigation. It is run by King's Forensics staff whose research is at the cutting edge of innovation and advancement in the field.

This exciting new MSc will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue further research in forensic archaeology and anthropology, and/or find employment, either within a forensics-related profession or the graduate market more generally. This is an intensive, hands-on, practical course, which includes extensive analysis of human skeletal remains, mock court experience, excavation of ‘mass graves’, and knowledge of the legal and ethical issues associated with forensic contexts. This MSc is aimed at graduates from a variety of backgrounds, who seek knowledge, experience and skills in forensic archaeology and anthropology. The course is unique in the UK in terms of its strong international humanitarian focus, and the research excellence that is at its core. The course has been designed to fulfill the accreditation criteria of the Chartered Society of Forensic Science Component Standards and to align with the UN Sustainability Goals, in particular peace and justice.

Teaching takes place in the Centre for Forensic Science – a modern purpose-built laboratory for practical forensic training. It's equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for analysis of a wide range of evidence types. Facilities includes a microscopy suite, DNA profiling laboratory, analytical chemistry laboratory, blood pattern analysis room, and a suite for setting up mock crime scenes.

The Masters degree in Forensic Psychology is the only BPS accredited programme in Wales, offering a unique opportunity for students to study Forensic Psychology in the Principality. Working collaboratively with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Services (HMMPS) and secure forensic mental health facility providers in Wales helps keep the programme up to date with strategy development and policy decisions. Regular contributions from Practitioner Forensic Psychologists working in Wales enables students to understand more about regional services and their impact on society locally. In addition, the programme benefits from the input of several national and international contributors who share their extensive specialist knowledge and experience within the field of Forensic Psychology.

Our masters course is specifically designed to meet the criteria of the BPS Division of Forensic Psychology Training Committee. It’s accredited as the first stage towards gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS.

You’ll explore topics such as investigating and prosecuting crime, rehabilitation, and other current issues within forensic psychology.

In practical sessions, you might work on case formulations, complete violence risk assessments and undertake behavioural investigative advice reports.

As well as lectures, seminars and workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers to help you learn about what it’s like to work in the field. Past speakers include alumni talking about their careers, members of the local police force, and psychologists working in prisons.

Our course lecturers have forensic research and practice experience and draw on their experience to bring relevant examples to lectures. Some members of staff continue to work in forensic practice alongside their teaching here at Manchester Met.

This course aims to respond to a national and international need for professionals who can apply a critical and scientific approach to their forensic practice, and who wish to have a broad understanding of the various interrelated disciplines of forensic medicine and science. The programme’s five modules will provide theoretical and practical knowledge of the forensic medical sciences, and will train students to be able to critically evaluate and interpret forensic medical and scientific evidence.

The MSc Analytical and Forensic Science is building a reputation for producing excellent scientists and highly sought-after graduates. Our postgraduates have been offered employment in some of the most prestigious companies in the UK and Europe, in fields ranging from analytical toxicology to forensic DNA analysis.

There’s a strong emphasis on the application of Forensic Psychology in professional practice, and theoretical modules include topics on how the theory is applied in practice.

MSc Forensic Psychology explores both victims and offenders. It follows the progression of an offender from their first contact with the criminal justice system until their eventual release into the community of transfer to conditions of less security. The role of ongoing assessment, intervention and throughcare is emphasized throughout.

You’ll learn from staff and practicing Forensic Psychologists (both NHS and HMPS) who are actively engaged in research and who regularly publish in leading forensic journals and present papers at both national and international conferences.

The full MSc course consists of eight modules (at 15 credits each) and an MSc Project/Dissertation (at 60 credits). Seven of the taught modules are delivered and assessed jointly by De Montfort University staff and 7Safe trainers with the eighth being a stand alone distance learning module that DMU is responsible for. The Project/Dissertation is delivered and assessed by DMU alone. Successful completion of the MSc gives students seven industry recognised professional certificates and the MSc.

Most students embark on their MSc after successfully completing one or more 7Safe courses. On successful completion of the 7Safe hands-on training course, you are then eligible to apply to DMU for an academic top-up/assessment by distance learning. Taking the course in this way is normally a part-time pathway and you should expect to study for two-three years. However, you can register directly with DMU for the full degree and the university then manages your attendance and progression through the relevant 7Safe modules and academic assessments. Registering with DMU direct can therefore provide a full-time route through the course.

Forensic Science (Analysis) examines the latest analytical, spectroscopic and separation techniques used in case studies, such as Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMS/ MS) and Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS). You will learn to investigate and analyse drugs of abuse, fibres and firearms and conduct fire and explosive investigations.

Forensic Science (Toxicology) offers in-depth training in pharmacology and analytical chemistry. You will study the biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs, focusing on criminal and road traffic toxicology, and on drug testing in sport. Many of our staff have worked as forensic scientists or as expert witnesses and are actively engaged in research

Kingston University has its own scene-of-crime house located on site, which is used to recreate crime scenes and enables you to put your investigative skills into practice. The property's garden is used by the forensic team's archaeologist for field investigations.

Lecturers on the course have wide experience in the forensics sector and many have worked either as forensic scientists or as expert witnesses. They are also actively engaged in forensic research, and are supported by visiting speakers from leading forensic consultancies.

Forensic toxicologists use modern analytical procedures to isolate, identify, and quantify drugs, endogenous compounds, and poisonous substances in biological samples.

This programme is designed to provide extensive training in the theory and practice of forensic toxicology and is taught by research-active academics and practitioners with specialist expertise. The content of the course is aligned to guidance from the United Kingdom and Ireland Association of Forensic Toxicologists on best practice in professional training and development in the field.

You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MChem. The MChem builds on the BSc with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. If you study for an MChem, you’ll spend a year doing industry-based research before returning for a final year of masters-level modules.
