This multidisciplinary course will equip you with the skills to tackle the problems that lie at the interface between life and physical science, on a molecular level.

Advances in the understanding of biomolecular processes have often depended upon the collaborative efforts of biochemists, chemists and physicists.

This course will enable you to bridge the gap that can exist between the physical and life science disciplines due to differences in language, perspective and methodology.

You will receive training from both academic and industrial leaders in the physical and biology fields.

This is a research degree leading to the award of an MSc by Research in Chemical Biology. Many training opportunities are available throughout the course, including seminar series throughout the department and a world-class annual visiting speaker programme, but the focus of the course is the research project.

The variety of research areas available within this course depend on supervisors’ current interests, as detailed on the Department of Chemistry website. This degree focuses on the molecular basis of biology, including the synthesis and adaptation of biomolecules, single molecule biophysics, the translational use of chemical processes inside living organisms leading to new therapeutics and the harnessing of enzymes. 

The nature of each student’s working week depends on their project, but students would typically carry out their research in one of the department’s buildings, engaged in full-time experimental or theoretical/computational work (or a mixture of the two).

During the first year, in addition to starting work on their research, students are encouraged to follow training courses chosen from the vast number offered by the department and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division Graduate School, and it is recommended that they attend at least three of these. A quarterly report on each student’s progress is submitted by their supervisor throughout the course.

Our Chemistry with Biomedicine MSci course will give you a strong theoretical and experimental understanding of chemistry. You’ll explore the different strands of chemistry and apply them to biological and biomedical systems - all under the guidance of our research-led scientists. Alongside this, you’ll gain valuable work experience with a year-long internship at a major UK company. In your final year of the MSci, you’ll explore your interests with a 6-month research project in our state-of-the-art labs or with our hospital partners. By the end of your studies, you’ll be an articulate, flexible and biomedically-aware chemist, ready for a career in a wide variety of industries, from chemical, biotech and pharmaceutical industries to finance, law and media.

Chemistry is the science of molecules - their structures, properties, synthesis - and how they interact with each other to create new molecules.

Its range and compass are enormous. From the simplest compounds like methane and sodium chloride to vast and complex biological molecules such as DNA or the proteins which form the basis for life itself.

An understanding of every facet of science, technology and engineering is therefore informed by knowledge of chemistry.

Communicating science is a challenging topic, but Chemistry with Scientific Writing MSc course has been expertly designed to build on your subject knowledge of Chemistry. Ranked 6th in the REF, Warwick's Chemistry Department, will provide you with a strong grasp on scientific writing and how to apply it. Warwick is highly ranked within the UK league tables, and is 61st in the world (QS World University Rankings 2022). This course has been designed for those looking to undertake further study or a career in communicating science.

The PGCE Secondary Chemistry course is the first phase of three-year entitlement for beginning teachers. The first phase of the entitlement is the Core Content Framework and this is embedded into all of our ITE courses. The PGCE Secondary Chemistry course is accredited by the DfE, and upon successful completion you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). During our last Ofsted Inspection, we were graded as “Outstanding” for all aspects of our provision.

Subject pedagogy (how to teach the subject for understanding) is explored in an innovative university / partnership model known as the POD (Professional Opportunities and Development). The POD involves a ‘hybrid space’ where university tutors and classroom practitioners work together. This model provides trainees with the ‘best of both worlds’, opportunities to work with research relevant university professionals with an abundance of experience in teacher training and school practitioners with experience of delivering the National Curriculum and experts in current classroom practice. The ITE course is delivered using a blended approach and follows a ‘knowledge rich’ curriculum that is current and evidence based.

The Durham University curriculum is known as the RRPP – Research Related Professional Practice. It develops key ITE themes that reflects the Core Content Framework; starting through a genric lens and progressing to a subject specific viewpoint which is then supported with concrete examples in a school environment (POD).

The main POD schools are Sedgefield Community College and King James 1 Academy in Bishop Auckland however there are a number of regional schools who contribute to the overarching programme.

Beginning teachers work in classrooms in POD schools with expert staff to develop

teaching skills, knowledge and understanding that are observed, deconstructed and analysed and that can the be applied during their own teaching placement.

We believe strongly that to be able to teach successfully you must acquire a good understanding of the 'big ideas' of science as well as learning about how to teach science. Core Science addresses your own understanding of the key concepts underpinning science, covering substantive and procedural knowledge in detail. We utilise research and evidence-informed progression toolkits for key concepts in science to provide:

• appropriately-sequenced steps for learning progression
• diagnostic questions to reveal preconceptions and common misunderstandings
• response activities to challenge misunderstandings and encourage conceptual development.

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry delivers comprehensive training in analytical chemistry, with a specialist module in clinical analysis.

The course offers the opportunity to complete a research project in our research laboratories, with constant contact between staff and students which creates opportunities for you to comment on, and take responsibility for, the direction of your studies. Alternatively you may complete the project at your place of work if appropriate.

This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of key areas of analytical science and its practical applications, advance your understanding of recent advances in the field and equip you with the skills to formulate a research or method development plan and carry out the appropriate literature and data searches. You will also learn how to carry out chemical manipulations, operate advanced analytical equipment and work safely and efficiently in a laboratory.

Queen Mary offers highly regarded training in both theoretical and practical chemistry. You’ll develop an advanced scientific understanding of the physical and chemical properties of matter, including the nature of atoms and molecules, their structure and composition, their reactions and the ways they are used in products and materials.

In your first year, you’ll study the fundamentals of organic and inorganic chemistry, spectroscopy and states of matter. Later you’ll study physical and quantum chemistry, computational chemistry and organic synthesis.

Chemistry is a practical subject and you’ll develop advanced skills through frequent lab work. During your final year, you’ll conduct your own research project, either laboratory- or literature-based.

Choose your own pathway through this degree — add a year in industry or studying abroad, or carry out an additional year of advanced study to graduate with an MSci.

You'll develop your own bespoke course with our broad range of taught modules. You'll then have a 24-week research project.

Research is the foundation of our teaching. Course content changes to reflect:

You'll work in academia but also may have opportunities in industry.

The MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry course gives you a great opportunity to build experience and confidence in applying your chemistry skills in a commercial laboratory environment.

You will spend your third year working at a leading organisation in the chemical industry, paying reduced fees for the year you are on placement. Most students earn salaries during their placements and many are offered a graduate level job at the end. Previous students have worked in labs at businesses such as GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, and even companies overseas.

Our Masters by research programme provides the opportunity to undertake a short, in depth independent research project in one of our research groups. It will equip you for more sustained and original work at the doctoral level or for advanced-level applied research positions. This degree will develop relevant analytical and technical skills, together with transferable skills related to research, communication, problem solving, and independent working.

You can also choose to complete a Professional Training placement, with opportunities available among leading chemical companies in the UK and further afield. You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MChem (Master of Chemistry).

The MChem builds on the BSc course with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. On an MChem, you’ll spend a year doing research with an industry partner before returning for a final year of masters-level modules. Depending on your progress, you may have the option to switch to a BSc or MChem during your studies.

The course combines theory, practical skills and research elements. You will select three theory modules from a range of advanced chemistry topics, allowing you to tailor the course to your specific interests. All of these modules run throughout Semesters One and Two, align to the School’s research interests and will be taught by world-leading academics.

In Semester One you will receive lab-based training in advanced practical techniques covering areas of synthetic, analytical and physical chemistry. This will be complimented by a module dedicated to developing your skills as a researcher, all of which will prepare you for your research dissertation and subsequent career.

Our specialist research areas include atmospheric chemistry, chemical biology, materials and interfaces, spectroscopy and dynamics, and sustainable synthesis and catalysis. Your research project will be carried out within one of our outstanding research groups. In Semester One you will be supported in selecting a research project that interests you and aligns with your career ambitions. You will meet your supervisor, familiarise yourself with the contemporary literature around your chosen project and begin to plan your experiments. From Semester Two until mid-August you will work alongside PhD students and post-doctoral researchers in one of our research teams to conduct your experimental work and evolve your project report.
