Combine ground-breaking literary and historical approaches with exclusive behind-the-scenes training at the British Library. This course covers material ranging from early modern race studies and literary geographies to textual editing meaning you will gain a critical understanding of the past to tackle the main challenges of our own time: racial and gender equality, the environment, and social justice. On MA Classics you will focus on the study of the languages and literatures of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Ancient Greek is the language in which many of the basic concepts underlying western society found expression for the first time.

Latin was the language of the most powerful and durable empire of the classical world. It remained the principal language of scholarship, record and literature in western Europe for more than 1,000 years.

The Medieval and Renaissance Literary Studies course includes the possibility of taking interdisciplinary modules involving other departments including History and Archaeology. Our course offers up-to-date training in research methods and skills. You will choose three modules, at least two of which are from within the pathway, and you will write a dissertation on a subject related to Medieval and/or Renaissance studies.

An MA in Medieval and Renaissance Literary Studies is often the platform for further research at PhD level, as well as providing an excellent grounding for jobs in education, the arts and the media.

Throughout your studies you will:

• follow a full research training programme leading to the completion of an original dissertation in a topic of your choosing;
• take core modules designed to deepen your understanding of methodologies appropriate to the study of literature from the Renaissance to the present;
• choose an optional module from a variety of disciplines, including English or American Literature, Creative Writing or Film, or you can choose to take a Work Placement module;
• work with a research-active supervisor to develop and pursue your dissertation, and participate in the academic life of the School of Humanities more generally;
• receive pastoral support from a personal tutor and Programme Director;
• receive support if applying for PhD study at Keele University of further afield.

What does it mean to study comparatively? Our BA Comparative Literature and Culture with Foundation Year gives you the opportunity to explore connections across national boundaries and different periods from the Renaissance to postmodernity, and to consciously reflect on your critical approach. You will be able to study the literature, thought, history, film and visual culture of the French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American worlds through a number of comparative modules focusing on specific themes across time and place, as well as through more in-depth modules focusing on a single culture.

You will explore transnational phenomena and you can also pursue an interest in other forms of comparison, for example, between text and image - we offer modules focusing on literary adaptation across media and many other types of encounter between literature and visual culture.

There is no language learning requirement for this programme, and all texts will be taught in English translation, but you can develop your language skills to a higher level as part of the degree programme if you wish. You have the option of studying up to three language modules, including starting at beginner level.

he academic study of children’s literature has developed over the past 30 years, and is now a recognized multidisciplinary field of enquiry. The MA Children's Literature will enable you to explore the relationship between reader, writer, text and context, and consider the critical perspectives that underpin those interactions.
