The EdD is a research degree for experienced professionals from education and related fields who would like to extend their professional understanding and develop skills in research, evaluation and high-level reflection on practice. The Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research is an internationally recognised research centre specialising in intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism, across the lifespan.

This course is aimed at students who have or are soon to complete, a suitable HND from a college in Scotland. It's a 4-year route into teaching and comprises two years of study for an HND, followed by two years of study at Strathclyde. You have direct entry into Year 3 of the BSc (Hons) in Education and Curricular Studies with a Teaching Qualification.

Our multidisciplinary Educational Psychology degree looks at learning within the wider world, across diversity in both context and individuals. Nurturing an interest in education and a deep concern for social justice, this course uses the lens of psychology to explore the psychological, social, cultural, and economic contexts of education including local, national and international policy and practice. As part of the core psychology accredited programme, you will have the opportunity to learn about behaviour from a range of perspectives (e. g., biological, cognitive, social, and developmental) and to develop skills in psychological methodologies, culminating in a final year dissertation project. This core programme is supported by modules addressing core ideas, methods, and issues in the field of education as well as modules specific to the field of Educational Psychology.

 Informed by our Centre for Research in Early Childhood, the Psychology Centre for Health and Cognition, and building upon our scholarship in psychology and education, within this course you will have the opportunity to discover the science of learning as it relates to both groups and individuals and gain the research skills to investigate and generate new knowledge in the field.

 This programme has professionalism and applied psychology at its core. Throughout the curriculum, and particularly within the embedded placement opportunity, the course will help students identify their professional aspirations and actively nurture them with independent learning and opportunities for reflection. The programme provides eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society, provided the student achieves a 2.2 overall and passes the final year dissertation. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills for further studies or employment within the education psychology sector and beyond.

Educational psychology draws on a wide range of psychological theory and real-world experiences to build an understanding of how children develop and learn.  It takes account of the social and cultural contexts of children’s lives and schooling, as well as their individual growth and development.

You'll cover all the core areas of psychology set out by the British Psychological Society, applied to the context of education.

During the three-year course, you’ll experience placement opportunities to develop an understanding of the different psychological approaches needed to address social problems and you'll use data from real-world projects to develop skills in research and evaluation with academic staff.

Learning psychology through its real-world applications will provide you with the best opportunity to develop a deep understanding of psychological theory and practices. For example, you'll learn to understand the experiences of children with special educational needs or disabilities. We will also explore how wellbeing can impact learning, particularly how social, emotional, and mental health aspects changes how able a student is to learn.
