We believe that good writing always comes from good reading. Our teaching emphasises the importance of engaging with the wider world of literature in order to develop your own style. You will study varied and fascinating writing from the past, as well as learning from contemporary writers. You will learn to read and analyse texts to develop your understanding of creative processes and apply this to your own writing.

When you study Creative Writing at York St John University you will become part of the York Centre for Writing. This is a lively, friendly community of writers which acts as a hub for producing innovative new work in the city. We have strong links with the wider literary community and publishing industry. This means you will have opportunities to enhance your learning through regular visits from industry professionals and innovators, including agents, publishers and literary activists.

Our involvement in the annual York Literature Festival gives you the chance to learn directly from popular and internationally-acclaimed writers. There are also plenty of events, performances and publications which you can get involved with throughout the year.

You will be given a foundation in the main genres of Creative Writing and the fundamentals of contemporary professional writing and editing. Over three years you will explore writing prose, poetry, life writing and media writing, taught by award winning writers and guest speakers from industry. You will have the opportunity to attend a vibrant series of lectures, workshops and readings from visiting writers.

At the University of Worcester our focus is to help you establish your own identity as a writer and enhance your skillset to enable you to pursue a career that utilises your excellent writing and communication skills. Throughout your degree you will be encouraged to experiment as you are mentored by professional writers who will help you to discover the variety of career choices available to you. 

You will be supported to develop a writer’s network and evolve your own distinctive writing practice and submit your work for publication.

Our approach to the English & Creative writing course is innovative, modern and friendly, giving you a comprehensive understanding of English literature as a core basis for your creative work.

As part of your experience, you’ll get the chance to work with award-winning scholars and creative writers. 

As a politics student, you'll look at the work of governments and their policies and study the behaviour of those who govern - and who they are governing - both at home and abroad. You'll also gain knowledge of domestic and international institutions and issues relating to conflict and cooperation.

We cover diverse and relevant issues, such as international terrorism to the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum. Our graduates go on to work in a number of areas, with many pursuing academic research careers in the UK, Europe and North America.

The BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing degree at Cardiff Met will help you find and develop your voice as both a writer and a critic. The great authors you study will inspire and influence your writing. Meanwhile, developing your own creative work on the degree will lead to new insights into technique which, in turn, will sharpen your analysis of literary texts. If so, this exciting new BA Creative Writing and English with Foundation Year is ideal. In the heart of literary London, in a building that was once home to Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group, you will study with leading academics and celebrated published authors across the fields of fiction, poetry and drama.

You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of literary writing in English, from earliest times to the present day. This degree culminates in the opportunity to develop both extended creative and critical pieces under the guidance of award-winning writers.

Before proceeding to the main degree, you will spend your Foundation Year preparing yourself for a degree in the arts by improving your study and research skills and gaining arts-related knowledge and understanding. You will also have the opportunity to study a language, should you wish to.

Goldsmiths' Department of English and Creative Writing is one of the most established and long-running creative writing centers in UK Higher Education, and many of our graduates are now leading writers and editors in their field.

Our location on the doorstep of central London means that you will have easy access to one of the most diverse, historic, and dynamic literary centers in the world. Our creative writing courses are taught by world-renowned writers from The Manchester Writing School; one of the most successful of its kind in the UK, with more than 95 graduates and MA students who’ve gone on to become published writers. But skilled writers must also be well-developed readers and this course offers the best of both worlds, allowing you to combine Creative Writing and English as part of a joint degree.

While studying and practising creative writing, you’ll take a range of options from the English degree, including American literature, film, television and cultural studies. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to take part in creative writing workshops, focussing on two options from the selection of: prose, poetry and script. Our placement route offers you the opportunity to spend your third year on an industry placement, allowing you to apply university-based knowledge, skills and understanding to the world of work, and giving you an advantage when you begin looking for your first job after graduation. Or you may have the chance to spend a year expanding your horizons, studying with one of our partner universities overseas.* In your final year, you’ll be ready to undertake an all-important independent creative project.

Lancaster's degree in Theatre and Creative Writing is taught jointly by the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) and the Department of English and Creative Writing. It combines the study of Theatre with the writing of original and imaginative fiction, poetry or plays. These two different focuses reinforce and complement each other.

Studying Theatre at Lancaster gives you the opportunity to learn about innovative twentieth and twenty-first century theatre and performance through an exciting and varied mix of practical and academic approaches. Your Creative Writing courses are taught by a team of widely published authors through a combination of lectures, readings, practice and discussion in regular tutor-led workshops. Your degree includes an Introduction to Creative Writing in your first year, and in your second and third years of study you will choose additional genre-specific units such as Short Fiction, Poetry Writing or Creative Non-fiction.

Students can develop their own distinctive voice as an author and philosophy of composition, as well as explore the theory and practice of building a diverse portfolio of work across forms and styles.
