Our interior design course focuses on how design responds to the surrounding environment. We explore design interventions in existing buildings and neglected spaces with a hands-on approach to crafting their interiors. We study the space between object and architecture and promote an adaptive re-use approach to shaping the world around us with human, social, economic and environmental sustainability embedded in our process.

Interior design is the study and design of interior spaces in a range of public and private environments.

Gain the knowledge and technical skills you need to succeed in interior design. You will start with activities that immerse you in studio work and digital design. This will enhance your drawing, modelling, making, researching and creative thinking abilities. As you progress through the course you will:

• Respond to briefs and present your own proposals
• Learn about scale and proportions for interior design
• Explore materials and processes for interior design
• Use computer aided design (CAD) for your work.

Practical workshops are an essential part of this course. You will learn new skills, develop and apply them to your projects. These projects will get bigger and more complex each year.

By studying our BA Interior Design degree, you will learn the importance of sustainability and environmentally responsible design; tradition and heritage of place; aesthetics and materiality; as well as the impact design has on human experience and well-being.

From the outset, you'll develop design proposals, working across a range of interior spaces such as restaurants, hotels, retail spaces and museums. In today's design world, sustainability is paramount. Finding new uses for old buildings is a key skill. 

Design Studio projects form the core of the course, and you're supported through seminars and lectures to develop knowledge of contemporary interior design practice. You'll also have the opportunity to learn about teamwork and client relationships by working on "live" projects with external audiences or collaborators. 

Historical and critical studies modules allow you to learn about the history of design and develop key writing and communicating skills, leading to an extended essay in your final year.

You'll explore the professional world through Professional Context modules, developing knowledge of contemporary designers, how they work, and the projects they have completed. This will include visits to factories, production companies, studios, exhibitions, and recently completed projects.

This online course gives you the freedom to craft your interior design future. With practicing academic staff and the opportunity to collaborate with our industry partners on live briefs, you'll consider the impact of interior design while tracking real challenges and delivering forward-thinking projects such as as experiential brandscapes and pop-ups, as well as localised and personalised spaces.

BA (Hons) Interior Design is concerned with the occupation of space, how it is used and importantly, how it is experienced. We promote the understanding and subsequent remodelling of existing spaces, in order to create meaningful interventions. 

This course views interior design as a distinct, rigorous practice. Through architectural and design interventions, we engage with collaborative and creative ventures to enhance human interaction with their environment. This can be applied at an architectural scale whilst appreciating the detail and fabrication of objects, surfaces and materials.

The core elements of the course are taught by practising designers and architects, touching on all aspects of interior design such as interior architecture, exhibition design, event /set design or object/element design.

The course advocates the synthesis of this ideology as a creative, rigorous and intellectual process. We value ideas, invention and practical resolution in the creation of new, and often unconventional interior identities. We can create experiential, experimental or functional spaces. We shape environments, generate identities, question programmes, detail objects, design or specify materials and furniture. 

Ultimately, we place human involvement with space at the centre of all our endeavours.

Starting with the principles of interior design, you’ll progress to larger projects, and explore art, architecture, analytical drawing, printmaking, model making and CAD prototyping/fabrication as part of the design process. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit Europe on a residential field trip with options including exploring creative interiors in Berlin, Barcelona or Prague.

Interior Design challenges us to rethink existing interiors as well as looking at the spaces created between structures. It focuses on the way people interact within these environments.

On this course you’ll explore the regeneration and adaptation of real buildings and sites and learn how to turn old commercial premises into exciting new spaces for exhibition, retail, leisure, eating and socialising purposes. You’ll develop skills in drawing, 3D modelling, computing, video-modelscope and computer-aided design (CAD).

You’ll also learn about the importance of visual communication, design cultures and heritage, and culture and context.
