The BA in Human Sciences was founded in 1969 by specialists across a range of departments at the University.  They recognised the need for an interdisciplinary understanding of fundamental issues and problems confronting human societies. This need is as critical now as it was then, as is reflected in the global intensification of interdisciplinary research across traditional subject boundaries in the decades since the degree began. Central topics include the evolution of humans and their behaviour, molecular and population genetics, population growth and ageing, ethnic and cultural diversity, and human interaction with the environment, including conservation, disease, and nutrition. Studying the connections among human biology, evolution, development, psychology, behaviour, ecology, society, and culture equips the human scientist to develop professional competencies suited to addressing multidimensional human problems within a framework of human diversity and sustainability.

This programme prepares you for a management role within the early childhood learning and care sector.

You will examine issues of:

• childhood, including childhood studies
• health and wellbeing
• child development
• education
• family sociology
• childhood policy and rights

We support you to:

• build your knowledge of leadership, management and professionalism
• develop communication and management skills
• learn about organisational development and inter-agency working

This programme is work-based and does not involve placements. You will need to be working with children and families while taking the degree.

Biological sciences form the basis of many new areas of science and technology. They are the foundation of our understanding of a diverse range of subjects – from evolution, genetics and diversity to medicine, drug and human development.

On this course, you can choose to study human, medical or genetics and molecular biology.

Practical work includes a laboratory and/or field-based project, a data project or a systematic review. Project work might be based in a laboratory or organisation outside the University. You'll gain the knowledge, techniques and skills you need to boost your employability, ready for when you graduate.

By studying Health and Human Sciences you'll develop expertise in a range of fields related to some of the most pressing, important and challenging public health issues of our time.

You'll be challenged to explore questions such as:

• Why do richer people live longer, healthier lives?
• Why do some public health initiatives worsen health inequalities?
• How can we use research evidence to inform health policy?
• How can psychology help us understand people's behaviours?
• How is a social model of health different to a medical model?

During your three years of study, you'll focus on five core themes: health systems, organisation and delivery; determinants of health and wellbeing; understanding and promoting relationships; information skills and digital literacy; biology and the body.
