Earth and planetary scientists seek to understand the Earth and other planets through observation.

Recent planetary missions and the development of new techniques are giving us radical new insights into Solar System evolution. Future exploration offers new opportunities to learn about planetary origins and evolution.

This degree focuses on geological and geophysical processes in the Solar System. There is a particular emphasis on planets, moons and smaller bodies, such as asteroids and comets. As an interdisciplinary degree, you'll gain skills in geoscience, physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computing.

First you will gain a strong theoretical and practical foundation in earth science. Then you're taught how to apply your knowledge to planetary science. By the end, you will understand how dust and gas evolved into planets such as Earth which are capable of supporting life.

The foundation in earth science will emphasise the fundamentals of geology and geophysics. From this you will learn how Earth’s atmosphere, life, surface, interior and external influences operate, interact and evolve.

You will use this foundation to understand solar system formation and evolution. You'll explore the physics, chemistry and geology of the main solid planetary bodies. Key planetary science questions you will examine include for example:

• How have collisions shaped planetary surfaces and affected planetary and biological evolution?
• What does the chemistry of meteorites tell us about planetary body evolution?
• How can we reconstruct the climate history of Mars from analysing pictures from rovers on the martian surface?
• Where is the best place to search for life in the Solar System?

All our courses combine a strong emphasis on observational and field skills, developed through field trips. These include modern numerical and analytical techniques required for a deep, quantitative understanding of Earth and planetary processes and systems.

Our department is in involved with current and future planetary missions, providing a unique insight into mission science and the opportunity to study recently acquired data.

We also emphasise the development of transferable professional skills such as group working, problem-solving, drawing inferences from incomplete data, computational methods and IT, and oral and written communication.

Earth Sciences is the study of the planet we live upon. The broad scope and rapidly-advancing nature of the subject is reflected in the course at Oxford, which provides sound and broadly-based scientific training.

We combine physics, chemistry and biology with geology, geography and palaeontology to answer fundamental questions about the origin, development, and future of the Earth. You will be trained in the skills required for the interpretation of rock materials and geological phenomena as well as applying theory and techniques from other disciplines to the study of the Earth and the environment.
 

The one-year Neuroscience Intercalated BSc combines lectures, seminars and a strong focus on research projects to provide you with a wide-ranging, accelerated exploration of the major topics in the rapidly evolving field of neuroscience.

Neuroscience is the study of:

• the nervous system
• how the brain works
• how cells interact to control behaviour

Research in neuroscience tries to better understand the structure of the nervous system - how it works, develops, malfunctions, and how it can be manipulated.

We aim to develop more effective treatment of diseases such as:

• stroke
• neurodegenerative disease
• mental illness
• cancer
• toxicity
• trauma

Neuroscience is about understanding the most complex organ in the body – the brain. Of the four degree courses taught by the School of Life Sciences, this is our most specialised degree. This course will appeal to those who have a strong interest in how the brain and central nervous system works, neurological diseases and treatments.

This course has received interim accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology (RSB), and is pending full accreditation upon graduation of the first cohort.

The MSci degree offers you the chance to also take research-based study in your fourth year. There are two types of MSci degree available via the Natural Sciences route:

• The MSci in Natural Sciences allows you to take modules from a range of subjects, but you would normally specialise in at least one of the following subjects in your fourth year: Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.
• The MSci Joint Honours degrees are available in the following combinations: Biology and Chemistry, Biology and Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science and Mathemetics, and Mathematics and Physics.
• The two degrees above allows you the option of completing a replacement Year Abroad in Year 3. Note that the Year Abroad is competitive and so applicants cannot apply for these pathways through UCAS.

We place a particular emphasis on the scientific study of livestock and companion animals (including horses). You'll study subjects that reflect the whole life of an animal:

• microbiology and biochemistry
• animal health and behaviour
• animal reproduction and nutrition

We bring your learning to life through extensive interaction with animals throughout your degree. You'll gain practical experience through regular visits to local animal centres and the University's two farms. You'll also enjoy input from professionals in the animal science industry.

Your third year group project to organise a conference on animal science equips you with marketable skills such as project management, organisation and teamworking.

Natural Sciences is a challenging degree that allows you to study across all of the scientific disciplines to an advanced level. Our pathways let you customise your Masters degree to suit your interests and career aspirations.

If you are interested in studying more than one scientific subject to an advanced level, our degree allows you to combine up to three different subjects throughout the programme. You can keep your interests open or choose to specialise as you progress. Either way, our Natural Sciences MSci degree is designed to challenge the brightest students who are highly motivated and prepared to apply themselves across multiple boundaries. You can choose pathways from ten subject areas that can be combined together to create a purpose built degree programme. The subject areas are:

This course combines elements of traditional physics with the study of quantum technologies at the time they’re moving into real-world applications.

You’ll learn about existing quantum technologies, such as the devices used to transmit internet data and those behind the lasers in Blu-ray players.

During your first year, you can switch between any of our specialist physics courses. You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MPhys, a direct route to a masters qualification. On an MPhys, you’ll spend a year doing integrated research before returning for your final masters-level modules.

Medical Neuroscience is the study of the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. If you want to gain advanced knowledge of clinical aspects of neuroscience – including neurodegenerative diseases – this is the course for you.

This degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the Earth, its living systems, and the complexity of environmental-societal interactions. Environmental scientists will develop a robust understanding of the science underpinning the environmental and ecological challenges of the twenty-first century, such as climate change, pollution, conservation and natural resource management.

Drawing on material from Physical and Human Geography, Geosciences and Biological Sciences, students construct a degree with their own specialisms and foci, within an overall Environmental Science umbrella. This knowledge is supported by the development of core competencies in a range of laboratory, field and IT methods. Throughout, this course contains options for UK and international residential fieldwork. This new degree is designed to provide students with the critical skills to tackle the full scope the environmental challenges we face and contains extensive optionality.

A Combined Studies degree allows students to design their own degree course from the subjects offered at Heriot-Watt University. Students take a range of subjects not covered by other degree courses and can pick the right set of subjects from the wide range available to meet individual learning goals. Students can adapt their study on a part-time basis or at a distance. With the help of a Director of Studies, students can devise a study course that will support their ambitions.
