BA Dance is a physically and intellectually challenging training programme that will build your skills in contemporary dance practices. The strong practical focus forms an immersive and challenging artistic environment that will support your development as a creative artist. Creativity and performance lie at the heart of the course; modules are designed to give you regular opportunities to present new work you have generated in a range of performance projects.

 Physical training is an important component of your study, particularly for the Single Honours route. Cunningham and Limon based classes, somatic practices and contact improvisation are key elements of this and underpin your development as a strong and confident ‘thinking body’. The programme offers specialist modules in Somatics and Digital Performance Practice and these areas will help to support your development as a creative dance practitioner. You will also have a chance to explore how dance intersects with other art forms to make performance and how you can use this knowledge to help to build the critical and analytical mind set essential to creative enquiry. 

Year 1 builds understanding in the key areas of performance, creativity and critical thinking and broadens your skills by introducing new ways to think and move. You will work regularly with industry practitioners to engender a broad understanding of the dance industry that will inform your career aspirations. Year 2 extends the creative and performance skills in exciting new directions and considers how to make performance work for different contexts. Year 3 focusses on developing a specialist area of study. You can work on a professional performance project, complete a work-placement with a professional dance organisation and undertake a substantial independent study. Some of this work can be done in collaboration with students from partner programmes such as BA Theatre and Digital Production.

We have designed our BA (Hons) Dance course around the needs of an independent dance artist – offering you vital skills and understanding, together with a portfolio of high quality choreographic, performance and teaching work.

It’s a program built around three intertwining strands: Studio Practice, Creative Practice and Facilitation. With contemporary technique training and regular movement classes, we’ll support your physical development. Throughout all years you’ll deliver dance workshops to peers, on work placements in local schools and within community settings as well as shadowing community dance practitioners and taking part in masterclasses from visiting artists.

In your final year you become part of the University’s Dance Company, giving you practical experience of touring performances and delivering workshops to real audiences. Throughout the whole course, you’ll find an approach that values community over competition, supporting your growth as a resilient and well-rounded dance professional.

BA (Hons) Dance (Level 6) is a unique degree that offers vocational and academic training across dance genres. You’ll develop technique, performance and choreography skills while undertaking practical research in the realm of dance. This final year programme offers you the opportunity to create your own work and hone your performance skills in our purpose built dance and performing arts studios.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with a variety of choreographers and professionals and fully prepare yourself for a career in the dance world.

Intellectually and artistically demanding, it offers daily dance classes in contemporary techniques, ballet for contemporary dancers, and fusion and improvisation. In your second year you can choose to specialise your studies in performance and choreography or education and community. 

Dance: Performance and Choreography is designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of performance and choreographic practices and develop their technical and artistic skills. Our successful graduates work as performers, choreographers, dance practitioners and producers.  

The aim of Dance: Education and Community is to help students wishing to teach and lead dance to gain a thorough knowledge of arts education and dance pedagogy. DMU graduates have landed roles as teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary education and as community dance practitioners and project managers. 

If you want to study dance and performance practically, but also want to gain an understanding of its history and the current dance industry, this is the course for you. No matter what your dance experience and background is, this course enables you to experiment and explore your creative potential, preparing you for a career in the dance or creative arts industries.

You will develop your own dance identity by studying a variety of topics, such as choreography, dance technique and performance, and the dance industry with a particular focus on teaching dance or event management.

The course is forward-thinking and emphasises the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion that makes the dance industry a vibrant and exciting place to work. There are opportunities to undertake a work placement or professional project or collaborate across disciplines (such as with a composer or filmmaker).

You'll work in a range of workshops and technique classes, across a range of dance and performance styles, for example:

• African
• classical Indian dance
• contemporary dance and contact improvisation

Throughout the three years you will gain a valuable insight into the dance industry through the Dance Industry modules preparing you for employment after graduating from the course.

The University of Lincoln's BA (Hons) Dance degree explores the link between creative practice and the theoretical study of dance with the opportunity to examine disciplines including technique, choreography, performance, teaching, and research.

Dance training at Lincoln focuses on contemporary techniques and works to develop and nurture creative practice. A variety of modules aim to help students to develop transferable skills in preparation for their future career.

This BA (Hons) Dance, Aerial and Physical Theatre degree offers practical training, technique classes and opportunities to work with professional choreographers and dancers. You will perform at venues such as The Showroom and The Studio Theatre spaces, and learn to use aerial and physical theatre apparatus in addition to your contemporary technique classes. The practice to theory ratio of this course is 70:30. 

You will develop your technical skills and understanding of contemporary dance practice with modules on dance performance, physical theatre techniques, narrative and character development, choreography and performance skills. Alongside this choreographic focus, your aerial technique classes will enable you to develop new ways of moving and extend your movement vocabulary.

Through modules such as Scenography for Dance and Mask & Costume you will have opportunities to discover scene and costume construction and be able to draw on these broader theatre making strategies to develop your choreographic voice.

Your Dance Technique classes will focus on a range of contemporary styles as well as ballet. You will also attend 3 aerial technique classes per week to enhance your performance skills. In years 1 and 2 you will be introduced to a range of apparatus, with the option to narrow your focus in third year if you wish to specialize in one apparatus. This course is available to you whether you are new to aerial work or a practiced performer as our technique classes can cater to mixed ability. You do not need previous aerial experience to apply.
