Artificial intelligence (AI) is the construction of artificial systems that have intelligent behaviour.

There are two main motivations for research. One is to understand natural intelligence through the use of computer models. The other provides techniques and technology for building systems capable of intelligent decisions and actions. Thus, AI is both a science and an engineering discipline.

Computer Science concerns understanding, designing, implementing and using computing systems. These systems range in scale, and complexity, from the tiny components of a single processor to the globe-spanning internet.

Creating links between theory and practice, the course covers the theoretical foundations of data and computation, computer architectures, the construction of computers and their operating systems. You will build on these theories to develop a broad range of practical programming and software development skills, along with highly transferable computational thinking, analytical and problem solving skills. You will examine how professional software code is best organised, and will begin working at the boundary where software and hardware meet to understand how software can interact with the physical world.

Increased use of Artificial Intelligence (Al) can bring major social and economic benefits by automating tasks currently done by humans. AI computers can analyse and learn from information at higher accuracy and speed than humans can. It offers massive gains in efficiency and performance to most or all industry sectors, for example in Health, Financial Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Social Media. Al is software that can be integrated into existing processes, improving them, scaling them, and reducing their costs, by making or suggesting more accurate decisions through better use of information. Artificial Intelligence has also been a main focus of Computer Science research at Ulster University for over 25 years, and we are uniquely positioned to deliver this degree course.

Artificial intelligence is a growing sector – with the potential to change the way we live in the future to the same level as the introduction of electricity did. You’ll work with industry standard software such as Python, R, C#, C++, scikit-learn, tensorflow, pytorch, pandas, Unity, Visual Studio and Jupyter notebooks.

The artificial intelligence industry is fast-growing and touches so many aspects of society, from business operations to our everyday lives. On this course you will gain a detailed understanding of artificial intelligence concepts and techniques, and learn to use this knowledge to address contemporary problems and challenges such as the use of microprocessor-based systems to control home appliances and the detection and resolution of collisions in applied mechanics.

You will develop fundamental skills, such as learning the powerful general-purpose programming language C++, and experience in-depth study of computer networks and systems. Using artificial intelligence code, you will learn how to control advanced mobile robots in our purpose-built laboratory.

Our modules are designed to focus on real-life industry scenarios to enhance your employability. On our Agile Methods module, you will gain experience in producing apps to specifications and learn how to negotiate between business clients and the development team.

You will also be able to enjoy projects and extracurriculars related to your course. Get involved with our dedicated Robot Club, where you will solidify your skills by instructing secondary school children on robotic construction, or take the opportunity to develop your own robot project, with the potential to compete in the annual international Robot Challenge in Vienna.

Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Sussex explores the scientific basis of intelligence in animals and machines.

The course covers the fundamentals of computer science, the principles of adaptive behaviour and intelligent systems, and their applications. You can also apply for a year working in industry.

What is in no doubt is that the direction that AI takes will have a a profound impact on all of our futures.

There is a major, and growing, skills shortage of AI practitioners. It is becoming increasingly important to understand how AI works; what it can and can’t yet do, what it may be capable of, how to utilize it, and how to develop AI in a responsible, scientific and ethical way.
