Computing is a creative and wide-ranging subject that focuses on using sound underlying principles and logical thinking to design and build systems that really work.

You will learn how modern computer and communications systems function, and how they can be used and adapted to build the next generation of computing applications.

The BSc (Hons) Computing programme equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required of a modern IT professional. If you want to study computing but haven't decided on a specific area of interest, this programme lets you personalise your studies and prepares you for a range of graduate roles.

In years one and two you will study the foundations of computing. In addition you will develop the skills required to build computer systems utilising a range of technologies. In years three and four you will further develop expertise in core areas while being able to choose elective modules which allow you specialise in your chosen area of interest. Possible specialisations include mobile development, cloud systems development, secure software development, user experience development, advanced project management and Big Data. 

The programme offers the possibility of undertaking an industry placement or to study abroad through Erasmus exchanges. Students are also encouraged to take part in activities with the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE). Our computing programmes are accredited by the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS).

BSc (Hons) Computing adopts an applied approach to help you build an understanding of computing by specifying and implementing applications and experiences. A feature of the course is its attention to design, and the value of developing systems that are not only functional, but also reliable, intuitive and enjoyable to use. This thread runs through the entire course, yet is spotlighted particularly in user-focused modules such as Experi ence Design and Human-Computer Interaction. Another key focus is Industry-insight. Here we expose the scope and variety of the UK and international computer industry, while helping you mature the personal qualities needed to be effective in professional contexts. Industry-insight is consolidated in Innovation Lab, which is a simulated studio environment that supports the commercialisation of products in the computing space.

You'll collaborate with other students in the Games Academy – from animators through to sound designers – to develop a multi-disciplinary approach with creativity at its heart. By the time you graduate, you'll be confident in pursuing a career in software development, in the games industry and beyond.

Our BSc (Eng) Creative Computing addresses this shortage of talent, arming students with a portfolio of artistic, design and technical skills through an exciting and flexible programme.

You’ll learn core skills for new media production – interactive media design, arts computing and physical computing – as well as understanding the theory underpinning computer and multimedia systems.

In the second year you’ll choose one of technology, design, geography/media or film production to study in depth, picking up all the practical and technical skills you’ll need to work in the creative industries. The final year offers a wide choice of modules, so you can fine-tune your learning to match your aims and interests.

In your final-year individual project you can link your creative skills to research in the school, including e-textiles, interaction design and digital music, presenting your project in the Queen Mary Design Show.

Computing, from the internet to mobile computing, smart devices and beyond, has changed the world – and continues to do so. Next-generation robots, driverless cars, and digital currencies are just three examples of what is already on the way.

The modules on this course have been carefully designed to provide a fully integrated programme of study. Applied Computing BSc (Hons) is a practical, vocationally oriented course providing students with knowledge and skills for the modern, computer-driven workplace. The course is a contemporary mix of traditional computing subjects with professional and work-related skills.

The core modules include Introduction to Computing, Computer Ethics, Data Analytics, Information and Database Design, Programming in Python, Project Management, Human Computer Interaction, Programming with APIs and Frameworks, Mobile Application Design and Development and Artificial Intelligence. In addition to the core modules, there are a number of optional modules for students to choose from including Information and Communication Technologies for Development, Information Security Management and Governance, Internet of Things and Advanced Database Management and Programming, so you can tailor your learning to your areas of interest.

In your final year, you will select from a range of specialist options and also complete a computing project. 

Computing for Business and Management at Sussex combines a professional education in computing with specialisation in applications of computing to commerce. The course covers software development, blended with the study of:

You can also apply for a year working in industry.

You’ll study in our £12-million Future Technologies Labs, which include a student-focused hub, teaching labs with suites of high-spec computers, and project workspaces.

When you graduate, your skills in leadership, project management and strategy formulation will be excellent preparation for a career in computing and IT.

The combination of creativity and computing is highly sought-after by industry and there is a real demand for creative coders, digital technologists and computer artists of all kinds. 

In your first year you will cover the fundamentals of computing and programming, digital design and Information Management. You will work in a digital arts lab and produce games and apps.

The second year of the course includes an opportunity to work on a collaborative project in a real-world situation. Your technical training will include web and mobile technologies and Big Data analysis.

Those students who choose the arts pathway will find themselves making narratives for games or writing, staging digital installations, or giving live performances. Those who pursue the science path will focus on areas such as software architecture, systems design, machine learning or cognitive science.

Year 3 features a major project in which you will develop a product and become an entrepreneur. This is supported by studies of computational creativity (machines that create), emerging technologies, social computing, ethics, law and activism. The technological focus extends to AI technologies and computing for health. Arts pathway students will work in areas such as games and culture, and technology management.

Our Creative Computing with Foundation Year degree course will help you fulfil your dream of doing something creative with computing, even if you don't meet the required grades for our Creative Computing degree course, don't know what your speciality is, or are a novice.

You’ll get a theoretical and practical introduction to creative computing by studying three unique modules. You’ll foster necessary study skills and develop programming experience to create artistic works, such as audio production and 3D graphic design in Photoshop.

By the end of this one-year course, you'll possess the knowledge and abilities to progress to degree level – either on BA/BSc (Hons) Creative Computing or a related course.
