What is WMO? The full form of WMO is the World Meteorological Organization

The WMO is the principal spokesperson for the United Nations system about the condition and behavior of the atmosphere of the planet, its interactions with land and sea, the climate and weather that it creates, and the subsequent allocation of water resources. 

Global international collaboration is necessary for the advancement of  operational hydrology and meteorology as well as to profit from their application, as weather, climate, and the water cycle transcend national boundaries. 

WMO offers its 193 territories and member states the basis for this kind of global collaboration. 

The fields of meteorology (climate and whether), operational hydrology, and allied geophysical sciences are covered within WMO's mission. 

The Functions of WMO

  • To encourage the creation and upkeep of centers tasked with providing meteorological and related services, as well as to facilitate global collaboration in the development of networks of stations for the making of hydrological and various geophysical observations associated with meteorology;
  • To encourage the development and upkeep of mechanisms for the quick interchange of meteorological and related data; To encourage the standardization of meteorological and related findings and to guarantee the consistent release of data;
  • Implementing meteorology to water issues, agriculture, aviation, shipping, and other human endeavors;
  • Application of meteorology to water issues, agriculture, aviation, shipping, and other human endeavors; encouragement of operational hydrology endeavors and strengthening of the close collaboration between Hydrological and Meteorological Services;
  • To support the worldwide coordination of meteorology-related research and training, as well as training in allied domains, when suitable.
  • By promoting cooperation amongst its Members' National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and expanding the use of meteorology and hydrology in several societal and economic domains, WMO plays a significant role in enhancing human safety and welfare.
