What is USSD? The full form of USSD is Unstructured Supplementary Service Data

Text messaging is done using the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) protocol, which uses USSD. Short Message Service (SMS) and USSD are comparable. USSD use codes are composed of characters found on a mobile device.

Up to 182 characters can be used in a USSD message, which creates a real-time communication channel between the cell phone and a different device, usually a network or server.

Mobile money services, prepaid callback services, menu-based information services, location-based content services, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) browsing, and more may all be accessed via USSD. With USSD, customers can choose from a variety of menus to engage with right on their mobile phones.

The Uses of USSD

  • USSD banking is compatible with all mobile devices, including feature phones, in contrast to banking apps that require internet connectivity and smartphone capabilities.
  • An SSD is utilized for network configuration on a user's mobile device. Additionally, it offers an array of service choices from which a user may select to purchase airtime or get account balance information.
  • Systems for customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) can be integrated with USSD to request updated customer data. Better service to clients and data accuracy are made possible by this.
  • One use for USSD is mobile marketing. Businesses may obtain consumer input in real time by, for instance, sending out simple marketing questionnaires that consumers can answer right away.
  • USSD allows service providers, such insurance and financial services firms, to deliver their offers to clients and then ask for a callback to ascertain their interests.
  •  In order to facilitate two-way communication between consumers making orders and vendors notifying customers when the orders are on their way, food delivery services can employ USSD.
