What is dB? The full form of dB is Decibel

Decibel (dB) is a unit of measurement used to represent relative loudness or to express the ratio of two physical quantities, often electric or acoustic power.

Ten times the common logarithm of the power ratio is one decibel (0.1 bel). The method for calculating a sound's intensity in decibels is 10 log10 (S1/S2), wherein S1 and S2 represent the respective intensities of the two sounds.

This indicates that doubling a sound's intensity corresponds to an increase of little more than 3 dB. In everyday speech, describing a sound's loudness typically involves comparing it to a sound that is barely audible to the human ear.

Measurement of Sound Intensity Using dB

  • Frequency- The quantity of sound vibrations per second is measured by frequency, which is expressed in Hertz (Hz). This is the equivalent of how high- or low-pitched something is in real life. For instance, a child's voice has a high frequency. Health-wise, a lot of older folks experience difficulty hearing higher-pitched noises due to a condition known as high-frequency hearing loss.
  • Amplitude- The pressure or forcefulness of sound is measured by amplitude, which is expressed on the decibel (dB) scale. A sound gets louder the more amplitude it has. We frequently refer to this in everyday life as volume.
  • The measurement of decibels is logarithmic. This is a method of quantifying or counting anything that grows exponentially. For instance, a ten-fold rise in sound pressure level (SPL) corresponds to every 10 dB increase on the decibel scale. Although a sound measured at 0 dB is considered to be nearly silent, it is really 10 times louder at 10 dB. A sound is 100 times louder than almost silence if it is 20 dB.
