CTBT Full Form- Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty

What is CTBT? The full form of CTBT is the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. 

Under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), all nuclear explosions are prohibited, whether they are used for defense or non-defense. 

The preamble, seventeen articles, two annexes, and an agreement with two annexes make up this document. Part I of the Protocol describes the International Monitoring System (IMS); Part II of the Protocol covers On-Site inspections (OSI); and Part III of the Protocol covers Confidence-Building measures (CBMs). 

The Protocol also includes two Annexes: Annex 1, which lists the locations of different Treaty monitoring assets connected to the IMS, and Annex 2, which specifies the requirements for screening events. The CTBT Organization (CTBTO), housed in Vienna, is established by the Treaty to guarantee the execution of its stipulations, encompassing the clauses concerning international verification procedures. 

The Summary of the CTBT Treaty

• States are enumerated geographically in Annex 1 of the Treaty in order to facilitate elections to the Executive Council.
• The 44 states that need to ratify the treaty in order for it to go into effect are listed in Annex 2 of the agreement.
• The International Data Center (IDC) and the International Monitoring System (IMS) are described in Protocol Part I.
• Protocol II establishes the guidelines for conducting on-site inspections.
• Protocol III addresses steps aimed at fostering confidence.
• A list of the IMS network's facilities may be found in Annex 1 of the Protocol.
• The characterization criteria for IDC standard event screening are listed in Annex 2 of the Protocol.

Any State Party to the Treaty can propose changes to the Protocol, the Treaty, or the Protocol Annexes. If no state party casts an opposing vote, the amendment will be accepted by a majority vote of the state parties after being reviewed by an amendment conference.
