What is BMR? The full form of BMR is Basal Metabolic Rate. Our body uses calories at its basal metabolic rate (BMR) to carry out essential, life-sustaining processes. Also known as resting metabolic rate (RMR), this refers to the number of calories expended if one were to spend the whole day in bed.  In any scenario, a lot of people figure out their body's metabolism rate using the basal metabolic rate calculation. Our basal metabolic rate (BMR) determines how much of the calories we utilize (or "burn" or expend) each day. This comprises the energy required by your body to sustain vital bodily processes, including the heartbeat, cell synthesis, circulation, and other processes.

BMR Calculation and Significance

Calculation BMR-

A widely used method for estimating Trusted Source BMR is the Harris-Benedict formula, which accounts for age, sex, weight, and height.

  • Female- BMR = 655 + (9.6 x weight in kg) + (1.8 x height in cm) – (4.7 x age in years)
  • Male- 66 + (13.7 x weight in kg) + (5 x height in cm) – (6.8 x age in years)

Significance-

  • You may utilize your BMR to increase, decrease, or stay at your current weight. You can determine how many calories to eat by measuring how much you burn.
  • Because lean mass takes a lot of energy to maintain, your overall lean mass—especially your muscle mass—determines your BMR in large part. Your BMR will decrease if anything decreases your lean mass.
  • When attempting to lose weight, it's critical to maintain or even grow your lean muscle mass through exercise because your BMR makes up a significant portion of your overall energy intake.
  • Lean muscle mass maintenance also lowers the risk of injury during training, and exercise raises your daily energy consumption.
