CBI stands for Central Bureau of Investigation. It is a central body, empowered by the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946, that is responsible for investigating criminal offenses and corruption of national importance.

  • The department is headed by an IPS Officer who is appointed by the Central Government of India and has seven divisions- Anti Corruption Division, Special Crimes Division, Policy and Coordination Division, Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Economic Offences Division, Directorate of Prosecution and Administration Division. 
  • Since the powers of the CBI go beyond bureaucratic jurisdictions, they play an important role in administering peace and upholding the integrity of the country by curbing corruption and investigating high-profile crimes.
