Masters in Political Science in Canada

In our MA program, you’ll learn governance and leadership within a cohort model. You'll receive careful mentorship as you complete a major community-centered project. This project will be a mutually-beneficial, direct collaboration with a community.

This degree is full-time and seminar-style courses are offered on campus only. You’ll complete a Community Governance project (CGP), a written report and an oral defense.

The CGP can be completed off campus with an Indigenous organization or community.

The Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba offers a program of full or part time study leading to the Master of Arts (MA) degree.  The objective of the MA program is to provide an advanced level of understanding of political systems, decision-making processes, and procedures, institutions, and policies at all levels of government.  The degree is designed to prepare students to pursue further graduate work and also prepare them for careers in education, law, politics, community development, policy analysis, journalism, advocacy, management, and consulting.

Plant Science graduate program offers advanced study in applied plant biology, with a commitment to development of sustainable managed agroecosystems. Our graduate program offers opportunities for advanced studies in basic and applied research, leading to M.Sc. or Ph.D. degrees, in plant production, plant protection, plant biotechnology, plant physiology and biochemistry, and plant-environment interaction.

Graduate students have the option to develop research programs that address problems through an interdisciplinary approach involving collaboration with faculty members in other graduate programs (e.g. Soil Science, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, and Forest Science) on campus.

A Master's degree in Political Science is designed for students who normally would have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in Political Science and want to undertake advanced training in scholarly research.

The graduate program provides students with an advanced education in the discipline of Political Science at all levels including local, regional, national and international spheres. We specialize in comparative politics, political philosophy and Aboriginal-state relations, with additional specialties in other areas. Each student’s program of study is designed individually to meet his or her scholarly interests.

The MA in Political Science gives you the opportunity to address some of the most pressing questions in contemporary politics. As political thought shapes the world we live in, you will be encouraged to think about the relations between individuals and political communities from an analytical and critical perspective. Your research will be applicable to academia, public administration, private industry and NGOs. You will have access to inter-institutional research centers and research networks, such as the Center for Immigration Policy Evaluation, engAGE, Latin American Studies Network of Montreal (RÉLAM), and the Groupe de recherche interuniversitaire en philosophie politique de Montréal. Other topics currently being studied by our students include security studies and international relations, the history of political thought and emerging economies.

The Political Science major offers flexibility and an individualized program of study. Students typically complete between three and six graduate-level courses, usually through independent studies or by sitting in on 4000-level undergraduate courses and completing additional work.
