The Master of Science by research program is designed primarily as training in a program of advanced study and research. The candidate learns the fundamentals of research and acquires new techniques. The program may include formal coursework which is normally intended to prepare the candidate for work on the thesis. The candidate must undertake an original investigation but this would normally be more limited in scope and degree of originality than is required for a doctorate. Although originality is to be encouraged as much as possible, the work will be closely supervised in the early problem formulation stages and whenever a new technique is being used.

The Master of Philosophy (Chemistry) comprises 24 credit points of coursework and a 72-credit point thesis. Academic units may award credit for the coursework component and will determine the appropriate entry point. We will ensure that a supervisor with appropriate expertise is allocated to a candidate at the time of application. You are encouraged to identify potential supervisors who match your area of research interest by visiting the UOW Scholars website. You are also advised to make contact with a potential supervisor to discuss your project prior to applying for admission. The thesis is examined by two examiners, with no more than one being internal. You may be required to attend lectures in relevant topics from time to time throughout the program.

The Master of Philosophy aims to expand knowledge beyond the undergraduate honours or postgraduate diploma level, culminating in a research thesis. Upon completion of a master by research degree, you may apply to be considered for entry into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
