University of Kiel – A Perfect Guide

University of Kiel

The University of Kiel, Germany, has transformed into a globally acclaimed centre for research from its humble beginnings as a regional training hub. The University of Kiel was founded on 5th October, 1665. There was growing demand for highly educated civil servants and priests in the region at the time and the duchies were recruiting people from foreign universities for these positions. However, the expansion of the Schleswig Cathedral School led to the formation of the Paedagogicum publicum or university. A similar initiative was taken by Duke Hans the Elder who converted the Bordesholm Monastery into a learning institution for this purpose.

However, they ultimately passed to another region and demand arose for a proper university under the duchies by the end-16th century. From 1640, Duke Friedrich III had been asking for a university from the Emperor. This was allowed in 1652 but ran into rough weather on budgetary grounds. After a long struggle, the momentous day finally came in 1665. The university started with 18 professors in fields like law, theology, philosophy and medicine at the Franciscan Monastery.
