What is B1 Visa

The B1 visa stands for temporary business visitor. While there are several B1 visa requirements, those participating in business activities of a professional or commercial nature in the United States are eligible for this visa. These include contract negotiations, business consulting, settling estates, travelling for conferences (educational/scientific/professional/business), short-term training, transiting through the country, and deadheading.

B1 Visa Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the B1 visa include the following:

  • The trip purpose is to enter the country for legitimate business reasons.
  • The visitor will remain for a limited and specific duration.
  • There are sufficient funds to cover the trip expenses and the stay in the country.
  • There is a residence of the traveller outside of the United States that he/she does not want to abandon, along with other ties to the home country of a binding nature (which will ensure a return at the conclusion of the visit).
  • The traveller is otherwise admissible to the country.

How to Apply f or B1 Visa

The B1 visa application procedure involves the following steps:

  • Completing the online visa application- This is the nonimmigrant online form DS-160. The application form confirmation page should be printed and kept ready for the interview. You should also upload your photograph in the format mentioned in the requirements.
  • Scheduling the interview- Interviews are usually required for applicants with a few exceptions (those of the age of 13 and younger or 80 or older, and sometimes for renewals in case of those between 14 and 79 years of age). Schedule your interview appointment at your nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy.

Keep in mind that wait times may vary depending on the season, visa category, and location. Apply as early as possible for your B1 visa in order to ensure a smoother process.

The cost of the B1 visa is approximately $185 and is non-refundable. If the application is approved, a visa issuance fee may also be charged (if applicable for your nationality).

B1 Visa Processing Time

The processing time varies, depending on the location and other factors. The wait time for the visa interview appointment can be checked online. For instance, if you are in New Delhi, then the wait time is around 25 calendar days currently.
