The MSc by Research is an advanced research degree which provides the opportunity to investigate a project in depth and write a thesis which makes a significant contribution in the field. The research project is however designed to take less time than a Doctorate degree (normally two years, though it is possible to complete the requirements in a single year). It is not intended as a first step towards a DPhil, but rather as an alternative to a DPhil. Few students opt to apply for the MSc by Research unless there are limitations on the time or funding available.

The Mathematics MSc is a wide-ranging course mainly drawing on modules from Pure Mathematics with additional options to study elements of applied mathematics such as Theoretical Physics, Complex Systems and Financial Mathematics. The course is suitable for graduates who wish to pursue an advanced mathematical study pathway with the intention of studying at a PhD level in a mathematical discipline later on.

The Mathematics of Systems programme takes the form of a 1+3 year MSc and PhD.

The full-time MSc year is dedicated to developing a broad portfolio of mathematical techniques and partaking in small research problems with a strong emphasis on applied questions and practical approaches. The PhD years train you into an independent researcher developing and using new mathematics to solve real-world systems challenges under the guidance of two supervisors and in the context of real-world systems problems coming from our external partners or others, in health, industry and finance.

The Master of Science in Education (MSEd.) is a 30 credit graduate program designed with flexibility in mind. It allows initially certified teachers the opportunity to tailor the program to their interests. At its core, the MSEd. aims to deepen teachers' knowledge of subject content, of the theory and practice of teaching and learning, and of the diverse contexts of education. In a two-semester course, students develop skills in research-based inquiry focused on the classroom. This graduate program enables students to complete the curriculum requirement for professional certification in New York State.

The Mathematics Education Option, a predominantly summer program, is designed to strengthen the professional preparation of today's teachers. Two options are offered for this degree--one is at the secondary level and the other at the elementary/middle level. Many graduates of the program continue to teach, while others have become curriculum coordinators or mathematics supervisors. Students can tailor the program to teach dual-credit or AP courses.

The Department of Mathematics at Western Illinois University is committed to fostering a learning community rich in faculty-student interaction, collaboration on research, and promoting among our students an appreciation of mathematics. The Department?s graduate program offers a Master of Science and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. The graduate program prepares students for regional and nationwide in-demand professions. The masters program in the Department of Mathematics provides an alternative to the traditional programs by preparing students who would pursue a career in business, industry, or government, as well as to train mathematicians who would pursue further study towards a doctoral degree. The program offers a sufficiently flexible course structure, built on core courses and a wide range of specialized focus area courses.

By applying some courses simultaneously toward the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree, an advanced student can qualify for both degrees during the four years of undergraduate study. Admission to the BA/MA Program is by the standard graduate application form, completed and submitted no later than April 30 of the undergraduate student’s junior year of study. With the application, the applicant must supply an official copy of the current transcript and a statement of purpose. The GRE exams are not required, and the graduate application fee is waived. In addition, the applicant must have one member of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics submit a letter of recommendation.

Mathematicians use theoretical and computational methods to solve a wide range of problems from the most abstract to the very applied. UBC's mathematics graduate students work in many branches of pure and applied mathematics. The MSc program consists of 24 or 27 credits of taught classes and a thesis (6 credits) or essay (3 credits) supervised by a faculty member. Students enrolled in the Institute of Applied Mathematics program have the additional option of writing a substantial 12 credit thesis.

This program enables teachers, administrators, and other formal and non-formal educators at all grade levels to enact meaningful mathematics teaching and learning in all possible learning environments. Interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches are used to support rich mathematical investigations and to implement challenging curricular structures that exceed state and local standards and objectives.
