Supply chain managers coordinate the production flow of goods and services, enabling the transformation of raw materials into the final products made available to consumers, whether on local store shelves or through online retailers. Supply chain management, involving multiple vendors in different countries, is a key reason that people can buy an ever-increasing variety of goods and services at remarkably low prices.

The BS program in supply chain management provides W. P. Carey School of Business students with an in-depth knowledge of integrated supply chain management. The curriculum focuses on:

Managing an airport takes more than loading passengers and maintaining runways. It includes security, customer service, knowledge of federal regulations, baggage handling, staffing and more. When you major in airport management and operations at Purdue University you will gain the expertise necessary to navigate the many aspects of operating an airport. You will gain a broad exposure to aviation management with a strong focus on airport operations. Your courses will provide insights into how the world’s airports make daily business decisions.

The Operations and Technology Management (OTM) major focuses on the design, production, and delivery of products and services to satisfy customer needs. It equips students with the essential tools and strategies to use resources efficiently, make desirable trade-offs, and strategically redesign or restructure operations. OTM majors distinguish themselves by strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities together with the ability to provide high-level managerial insights into value-based service and production management.

OTM majors have many career opportunities due to their process orientation and analytical training. They are especially well-equipped for positions in supply chain management and logistics, business analytics, management consulting, service operations management, and manufacturing management.

This program is designed in support of Indiana Tech’s Phase 2 - Implementation proposal of the Charting the Future for Indiana’s Colleges and Universities Initiative. Indiana Tech has been invited to participate in this initiative and has identified the opportunity to further develop academic offerings in the area of engineering technologies.

 As articulated in the Lilly Endowment grant the Supply Chain Management program represents a needed technical program with Indiana Tech’s College of Business and one that will provide important opportunities for cross-college collaboration. The vision of Indiana Tech as articulated in the grant proposal is that the Supply Chain Management program will align particularly well with existing programs, courses, and faculty in the fields of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Project Management and Analytics. 

Program Learning Objectives

Supply chain management has responsibility for the movement of raw materials and component parts into and within a business firm and to the distribution of finished products and services to customers.

The Supply Chain Management program developed at Indiana Tech will provide students with a background for the design and management of supply chains including qualitative and quantitative modeling of supply chain systems. The Supply Chain Management curriculum has a focus on technical and analytical skills, leadership, and communication proficiency.

 Students will learn analytical skills used in system design frameworks and modeling that support data-driven decision making. Students will be able to identify and solve complex supply chain problems and will demonstrate heightened levels of proficiency in the investigation of complex problems grounded in mathematics, computer science, business, decision science and engineering.  In addition, students will learn techniques used to formulate solutions that meet specified needs with regard to public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic considerations.

 The provided material will develop skills in high demand for career paths in areas such as healthcare, energy systems, financial management, insurance, manufacturing and production systems, military planning, shipping and distribution, and transportation.

Industrial distribution and logistics encompasses all the elements of the supply chain, from raw materials to the final customer, and all of the transportation methods throughout the supply chain. Distribution and logistics managers coordinate the movement of goods, services, and information throughout the world. Distribution and logistics is an important segment of the economy worldwide. In the United States alone, distribution of industrial products is a four-trillion-dollar business, more than 10 percent of the gross national product.

In East Carolina’s bachelor of science in industrial distribution and logistics program, you will build a solid foundation for a career by studying a variety of functions performed by distributors such as supply chain management, warehousing, transportation, industrial sales, inventory management, strategic pricing, and purchasing.

Further, students will benefit from the program’s connection with industry leaders who advise program directors regarding course offerings and course content that is most valuable on the job market. Students will also be provided multiple opportunities to interact and network with industry partners on in-class projects, internships, and full-time employment post-graduation. Students will gain knowledge in core topics such as analytics for business decisions, business decision optimization, supply chain management, simulation for business applications, and quality management tools and techniques (Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, etc.). Graduates will be prepared to enter the job market in a variety of industries such as technology, healthcare, supply chain, manufacturing, distribution, and logistics.

Consistent with the mission of the College of Business, the mission of the Supply Chain Management Discipline is to provide a broad-based general business education that prepares students for careers in Supply Chain Management and related fields.  In addition to the BBA Learning Outcomes, upon successful completion of the program, Supply Chain Management majors will be able to:  

1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic transportation and logistics concepts
2. Describe the basic principles of supply chain management and techniques used to analyze various aspects of logistics systems
3. Analyze the effectiveness of warehousing and operations in the supply chain process
4. Describe the global sourcing process and the effect on the supply chain
5. Describe firm financial performance and with respect to the supply chain
6. Identify problems and improvement opportunities related to supply chain performance and performance measurement.

You will be able to master these kinds of challenges after delving into our Supply Chain and Logistics Management concentration.

Learning these methods and tools to increase revenue and reduce costs will position you well in a global economy that moves through supply chains. First, though, you’ll have some choices to customize your concentration.

The concentration begins with an introduction to Operations and Supply Chain Management, before moving on to industrial engineering topics such as Production System Design, Operations Research and Tools for Managing the Supply Chain, as well as information technology coursework such as Business Information Systems. Students in this concentration receive a Bachelor of Science in Management, in addition to completing the core Management program.

The coursework, however, is just half of the benefit of a Kettering bachelor’s. You will also have the opportunity to apply what you’re learning in the classroom on the job well before you finish your degree here.

Supply chain management coordinates the movement of products all the way from the sourcing of raw materials to the purchasing of products by the final users and the management of customer services. With huge corporations like Walmart, Dell, and Amazon performing millions of transactions a day, effective and efficient supply chain management has become critical to the world economy.

The Maritime and Supply Chain Management program is designed to provide students with an integrated working knowledge of maritime operations and supply chain management. It is the only undergraduate major of its kind east of the Mississippi River and graduates will be able to meet the needs of regional, national and international shipping, transportation and distribution industries. Students may choose either the maritime management concentration or supply chain management concentration.

Operations Management professionals provide a critical function for organizations, analyzing data and behaviour to optimize processes, manage resources, and improve profitability and service.

In studying Operations Management, you’ll learn to use computer models, mathematics, process analysis, and business analytics to interpret data and make business decisions. You’ll also develop analytical and problem solving skills that are useful in a wide variety of everyday situations, learning to ask "how," "why," and "why not" to find the most efficient answers to seemingly complicated questions.

Demand in the Supply Chain, Logistics, and Maritime Port Management fields has increased dramatically due to the fact that it is a $6 billion dollar industry in New Jersey alone. Once matriculated at NJCU, transfer students must complete at least 30 credits at NJCU to satisfy the university’s residency requirement. The Operations Management (OM) Major prepares students for careers in manufacturing and service management, operations strategy consulting, purchasing and supply management, project management, and quality management. OM professionals work with most other units in any organization, more so with engineering, human resource management, information systems, and marketing. The OM curriculum focuses on analytical decision-making, logistics, new product development, operations strategy, process improvement, project management, quality control, and supply chain management. Students are trained in ways of developing, making, and delivering goods and services efficiently and effectively – generating value by satisfying ever-changing customer needs while improving profitability.

The Department of Management offers a major area of specialization in Supply Chain Analytics for students pursuing the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. 

The undergraduate major in Supply Chain Analytics is designed to give students an understanding of the modern supply chains and the decision tradeoffs, skills necessary to model supply chain problems as well as source and analyze supply chain data to create efficiency in the firms.  Students who pursue the major in Supply Chain Analytics will be exposed to an understanding of predictive and prescriptive analytics to become a problem-solver in the complex supply chain systems; coursework that helps to broaden their understanding of how to help organizations to identify value-enhancing efficiencies; and hands-on experiences that explore actually analyzing modern real-world supply chains.
